LIONS CLUBS

The Pequot Lakes/Breezy Point Lions meet the second Monday of every month at the Pelican Lakes Conservation Club house in Breezy Point. They are a family friendly club, so you can take your kids to the meetings. For more information call Gary at 562-4850.

The Backus Lions Club will be selling fancy, ripe, juicy, huge Colorado peaches on Thursday, September 9 beginning at 8:00am at Jim's Off Sale Liquor parking lot on the west side of Highway #371, just north of Backus.  Sales will be first come, first served.  No advanced orders will be accepted. Profits will help the Backus Lions fund many area activities. 

Lakes Area Senior Activity Center

Nominations Sought For Brainerd Citizen Of The Year

Brainerd Community Action is accepting nominations for the 37th Annual Citizen of the Year 2010 award. This is an opportunity to recognize someone who has volunteered time for the betterment of the Brainerd Lakes Area. A Distinguished Service Awards banquet will be held this fall. Nisswa Seeks Citizen Of The year

The Nisswa Chamber is currently accepting nominations for the 2010 Nisswa Citizen of the Year Award.  To nominate a candidate, send a letter stating why your nominee should be considered, along with your address and phone number.  Mail your nominations to the Nisswa Citizen of the Year Selection Committee, Nisswa Chamber of Commerce, PO Box 185, Nisswa MN 56468.  All nominations must be received no later that August 31

Riverboat Goes Into Drydock This Fall

Aitkin's Mississippi Riverboat will go into drydock this fall for renovation.  The Riverboat Captains & Queens Association has established a fund to cover the cost of labor and materials.  Send your donations to Riverboat C&Q Association, Bremer Bank, 101 Minnesota Avenue, Aitkin MN.

Crisis Line Volunteers Sought

The Crisis Line needs volunteers.  Crisis Line volunteers are there to support and encourage callers. Crisis Line has been helping people deal with life’s problems for over 22 years in Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd and Wadena Counties.  The next training session for new Crisis Line volunteers will be in September.  For more information 828-4515.

Wild Rice Processing Demos at Mille Lacs Indian Museum

You're invited, every Saturday in September to watch museum staff as they process wild rice the traditional way.  Demonstrations are free, but admission fee does apply if you visit the remainder of the museum.  Each session lasts about 20-minutes and take place every hour, on the hour, from 12:00pm - 3:00pm. 

Community Events:

“The Gathering,” A fun filled Motley area event inspired by local history and family stories begins on Friday, September 3 with a Fish Fry at United Methodist Church 4:30-6:30 p.m. On Saturday, September 4 at 11:30am, there will be a chicken or ham dinner for $7.00 for adults; $5.00 for children. At 1:00pm, events will take place at the Motley fairgrounds pavilion including Motley Area Historical Society exhibits and other presentations.

The Motley United Methodist Men's Club will hold their annual Fall Fish Fry on Friday, September 3 at the Motley United Methodist Church.  The event will run from 4:30pm - 6:30pm.  Adults $7.00; 6-12 years $5.00.  This is a fund raiser for the Men's Club.  

The Outing Senior's Citizen Club is holding their annual bazaar on Saturday, September 4 in Outing at the Crooked Lake Town Hall.   Hours are from 8:00 AM to 12 noon.    Besides the bazaar crafts, plants and bake goods, a lovely up north quilt and over 30 other items from local business will be raffled off.    Raffle tickets will be available until 12 noon.

A Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Saturday, September 4 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm at the 50 Lakes Foundation Clubhouse North of Crosslake about six miles.  Adults $7.00; children 7-12 years old $4.00 and those 6 and under, free. 

The Pine River American Legion will hold a "Pig-Out" Rib Cook-Off on Saturday, September 4.  You're invited to stop by to sample contestants' ribs and help with the judging.  Ribs will be served beginning at 3:00pm 'till gone.  There will be a guest DJ with music from 12 Noon to 6:00pm.  For more information, call 218-587-9151.

Southern Gospel recording artist Linnie Doyle will be featured at the worship service at 10:00am at the Glory Baptist Church on Sunday, September 5.  The Glory Baptist Church is located 12 miles southeast of Aitkin off County Road 12.  For more information, call 218-927-3811.

The monthly breakfast sponsored by the Backus American Legion Auxiliary will be served from 7:30am - 11:30am on Sunday, September 5 at the Legion clubrooms located at Hwys #371 & 87 West.  $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for those under 10 years of age.  Proceeds go toward Auxiliary community, veterans & active duty troop programs. 

The folks at the Mille Lacs Indian Museum & Trading Post will demonstrate to kids how to weave a dream catcher to take home on Labor Day, September 6 from 11:00am - 3:00pm. Cost of each kit is $5.00.  Allow an hour to complete the craft.  This project is for children ages 8 and up. 

The Crosslake Chautauqua Program for Wednesday, September 8 will be held from 1:30pm - 3:30pm at the Crosslake Community Center. Topic will be "Having Our Cake and Eating It, Too," presented by Phil Hunsicker.  He will discuss whether it's possible to develop land and still protect it.  The presentation is free and refreshments will be served. 

The Nisswa Area Historical Society will hold its final membership meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 8 at 1:30pm at the Nisswa Community Center.  All members, visitors and interested persons are invited to attend.  For more information, call 218-963-3570.

The Lutheran Church of the Cross, located at Highway 371 & County Road 13, will host a blood drive on Thursday, September 9, from noon until 6:00pm and Friday, September 10, from 8:00am - 1:00pm.  They will also be drawing double red cells at the event.  Schedule an appointment at www.redcrossblood.org or call Joy at 218-963-2564.  Be sure to take a photo ID to the donation site. 

The 41st Annual Legionville Camp-O-Ree, Sponsored by the Brainerd American Legion & Auxiliary Unit, will be held Thursday through Sunday, September 9 - 12 at the Legionville School Patrol Training Center located on North Long Lake.  This event will consist of a weekend of family fun including games, singing and plenty of good food.  This event will help raise money for the School Patrol Training Camp.  For more information, call Jay Beebe at 963-7750. 

The Little Falls Friends of the Library will be hosting a used book sale at the Little Falls Carnegie Library. 108 3rd Street NE, Little Falls.   The hours for the sale are Thursday, September 9, 10 am to 8 pm, Friday, September 10, noon to 6 pm and a dollar a bag day, Saturday September 11, noon to 5 pm.  Books are priced – children’s, $ .25, paperbacks, $ 50, and hardcover’s $.75.  Some videos, DVDs, CDs and jigsaw puzzles are also available.

Central Lakes College students will be the beneficiaries of proceeds from the music-filled dinner show performed by the internationally renowned Hunt Family on Friday and Saturday, September 10 and 11. The Central Lakes College Foundation is sponsoring this annual gala at the new Gull Lake Center at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa. It is the biggest fundraiser of the year to raise funds for student scholarships at the community and technical college in Brainerd and Staples. The show starts at 7:30 each night, showcasing the talents of nine members of the Hunt Family performing Celtic, bluegrass, inspirational and popular tunes. Starting at 5:30, a Social Time includes the Silent Auction, where numerous specialty items, such as a specialty quilt, will be available. Dinner starts at 6:30. The Emerald Ash Borer is in Minnesota.  Get facts and options to protect ash trees during a three-hour intensive presentation at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Sept. 11, in the Arboretum's MacMillan Auditorium. Cost for the session is $15 for Arboretum members or $20 for non-members, and includes breakfast. To register, call 952-443-1422. The event is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Celebrate the 100 year Anniversary Party in Deerwood with the Deerwood Fire Department on Saturday, September 11 with a Pig Roast from 3:00pm - 6:00pm.  This event is free charge and there will be events for the kids to try, located under the water tower in Deerwood.  For more information, call Mark Taylor at 218-330-0973.

Central Lakes College Theatre in Brainerd will hold auditions for “A Christmas Carol” on Saturday, September 11 at 10 a.m. in the Bob Dryden Theatre. The Adventure ’N Theatre production’s musical version needs 12 children in grades 3-8 plus six teenage performers from ninth grade-up (three male, three female). The 1st Annual Emily Fall Ride will be held on Saturday, September 11 at Emily City Park.  Registrations is at 11:00am with the ride beginning at 12-Noon.  There will be a pig roast, raffles and music in the park after the ride.  $20.00 per bike or $30.00 per bike with two riders.  Cost is $10.00 for those that are hungry but don't ride.  Proceeds to the Community Care & Share Cafe and upgrading the kitchen. 

Enjoy the serene beauty of the Cuyuna Range from the saddle of your bike during the 7th annual Tour of Cuyuna Bicycle Ride on Saturday, September 11.  Choose from a 30 or 60 mile route with various rest stops that include food and beverage along the way with lunch to follow.  This is a recreational ride for all cyclists of all abilities and is not a race.  Cost is $25.00, which includes a T-Shirt.  For more information, call 218-545-4545 or visit cuyunalakestrail.org. 

The Mille Lacs Indian Museum & Trading Post will hold a Porcupine Quill Jewelry Workshop on Saturday & Sunday, September 11 & 12.  Participants will be making necklaces, earring and hair ties out of quills to take home.  Registration is required by September 8.  Cost is $50.00 for members of the public and $45.00 for band members.  There will be an additional $10.00 supply fee.  For more information and to register, call 320-532-3632. 

The award-winning Hunt Family Troupe of Irish step dancers, fiddlers, and singers will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 10 and Saturday, September 11 at the Gull Lake Center, Grand View Lodge, Nisswa.  The event, which starts with a silent auction/social hour, is a fund-raiser for the Central Lakes College Foundation, a non-profit scholarship agency for student scholarships. 6th Annual Old Fashioned Chicken Supper will be served at Light of the Cross Lutheran Church , Garrison, on Saturday, September 11, 4:00-7:00 pm.  Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 5-12 years of age.  Children under 5 are free.  Menu includes Oven Fried Chicken; real mashed potatoes with gravy; homemade coleslaw; vegetable; homemade pickles; garden grown sliced tomatoes; homemade apple pie; and beverage.  Light of the Cross is located two blocks west of the Super Valu in Garrison.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

The Spencer Ross American Legion Post #134 of Walker will be conducting a flag ceremony at the Veterans Podium on the north lawn of the Cass County Courthouse in Walker on Saturday, September 11.  The program starts at 7:40am with the Honor Guard posting the colors.  The flag will fly at half-mast for the remainder of the day. 

The Lone Eagle Auto Club of Little Falls will hold its 36th Annual Car Show & Swap Meet on Sunday, September 12.  The event is scheduled from 7:00am - 4:00pm, rain or shine, at the Little Falls/Morrison County Fairgrounds.  Admission is $5.00 with children under the age of 12 and senior citizens, 65 and older, free. Profits benefit local, area projects. 

The Central Lakes College Community Band will begin its fall season with the first rehearsal Monday, September 13 at 7 p.m. in the Rehearsal Hall (E471) on the Brainerd campus. Rehearsals will continue on the following Mondays: Sept. 20, Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25, and Nov. 1 and 8. The fall concert is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Chalberg Theater .Membership for the Community Band is open to brass, woodwind and percussion players from high school juniors and seniors through CLC students and adult musicians. Join David Jeremiason and Rev. Andy Kennaly, directors, as they tell the story of the John Savage summer estate on nearby Clearwater Lake that became a Presbyterian Church camp. The Unlimited Learning session will be held at Heartwood Senior Living Community in Crosby on Tuesday, September 14, from 1:30-3:30 pm. In addition, on Thursday, September 16, participants may join the Clearwater field trip, visiting Clearwater Forest and touring Eagle Lodge as well as the surrounding property. Those going on the field trip will gather at 1:00 pm at Hallett Community Center in Crosby and carpool to Clearwater Forest.

The Staples Area Mens Chorus will hold its annual “NEW MEMBER NIGHT” on September 15, 8:30pm, in the Staples Motley High School choir room.  This special rehearsal is designed to provide a relaxed “no strings attached” environment where men with even the slightest interest in becoming members of the chorus can attend.  “Men are encouraged to bring friends and come give it a shot!” Normal rehearsals are Wednesdays, 8:30-10:00pm, always at the high school choir room. 

On Wednesday, September 15, author Dave Kenney will speak at the ITOW Veterans Museum at 7:00 p.m. His book, “Minnesota Goes to War”, records the state’s role in the most significant event of the twentieth century, WWII. By telling the poignant stories of those who stayed behind—in support of the men and women overseas—this book is a tribute to the sacrifices made by ordinary people in extraordinary times. These stories honor Minnesotans who faced the war with equal amounts of determination and dread, courage and fear in places as far away as the Pacific and Europe and as close as our own hometowns.

A Community Education Program, Urologic Health For Men & Women: Fad Diets & Supplements- What really works and what is really worthless, will be held on Thursday, September 16 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Heartwood Conference Center in Crosby.  This program is presented by Riverwood Healthcare Center, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center and Adult & Pediatric Urology.  This free program will include a presentation by outdoorsman Ron Schara, called Fishing In Good Health.  For more information, call 218-927-5552.

The Lutheran Church of the Cross near Sportland Corners in Nisswa will feature The Teie Family Concert with music from Bach to Broadway on Friday, September 17 at 7:00pm.  A freewill donation will be taken to support the LCC Education Scholarship Fund. 

Join the Pequot Lakes Circle of Parents for the "Walk For Children," on Saturday, September 18 at 10:00am. .  Meet at the north end of the Trailside Park in Pequot Lakes, near Dru's Garden. Donations to Prevent Child Abuse Minnesota will be accepted that day.  Ice cream treats will be available at the end of the walk. 

Ageless Expo will be held on Saturday, September 18 from 10am to 2:30pm at Forestview Middle School, Baxter. There will be exhibitors and presentations with information on senior issues. You will want to attend if you are a senior, provide care for a senior or are interested in knowing what options are available in our community for seniors. Entertainment will be scheduled throughout the day. Last year over 400 attended this great community event!

On September 19 the Aitkin Area Chamber Of Commerce will be hosting its “1st Annual Riverboat Golf Scramble” at Ruttger’s on Bay Lake. They encourage you to get involved with this end of summer family friendly fun event. There are many ways to get involved. The Legacy Five Quartet, one of the nation's premier Southern Gospel groups, will make its' 10th appearance at the Heritage Assembly of God Auditorium in Baxter on Friday, September 24 at 7:30pm.  Tickets are $16.00 in advance or $19.00 at the door and are being sold at various locations throughout the county or on-line at www.itickets.com.  For more information, call 218-838-1812. 

The Crosslake Presbyterian Church will hold a Shredded Pork Dinner on Saturday, September 25 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm.  The church is located at 14444 Daggett Pine Road.  Entertainment will be provided by the Last Generartion, a local band, and there will be activities for the children.  Cost is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for children 10 and under.  This is part of the Crosslake Days Celebration.   

The 8th Annual Festival Latino will take place at Central Lakes College on Saturday, September 25 from 1:00pm - 4:30pm.  This event is a cultural fundraiser for scholarships awarded to CLC students studying Spanish & earning a Latin American Studies Certificate.  Cost is $8.00 for adults; $6.00 for students and 5 & under, free. 

Deep Portage Learning Center is seeking black ink drawings of wild animals, fish and birds that are native to the north-central Minnesota area. The winning artist's drawing will be featured on Deep Portage's 2010 critter art mugs. The Holy Cross Church in Harding will hold its annual Bazaar on Sunday, September 5 with a chicken and ham dinner.  There will be entertainment for the children and music with Dale Dahmen & the Polka Beats, along with Virg & the Eldorados.  The days starts with a Polka Mass at 10:00am. 

Now is the time to plan to get "down and dirty" in the Brainerd Area's first Annual Mud Run for charity.  Proceeds from the Mud Run will benefit Special Touch Ministries, Inc, an organization that serves the needs of people with disabilities. The zany Mud Run event is planned for Sunday, September 5 at 1:00 pm at Camp-Lake-Placid in Pillager. Pre-registration is $25 prior to race day. Registration the day of the event will be $30 for individuals. There is a discount for families and teams.  After the race, there will be concession opportunities available. Continuing Education

The Pequot Lakes Adult Basic Education (ABE) program is for adults who are interested in working to earn a GED (General Educational Development) diploma.  The class meets once a week for two hours.  For more information, call 568-9366.

Crosby Ironton Community Education offers Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Education Diploma (GED) classes at the Hallett Library in Crosby, each Monday that the library is open. Classes are held from 4-6PM and are individually paced and offered at no cost. For more information, call C-I Community Education at 218-545-8822.

General Announcements

Grace United Methodist Church's new fall schedule runs September 12 through May 22.  Sunday service at 9:00am with Sunday School for Pre-K through adults from 10:00am - 11:00am.  A coffee fellowship will be held at 10:00am. 

Meals on Wheels is available for Pine River and surrounding area residents.  LSS Senior Nutrition is serving the community out of Heartland Apartments at 445 Snell Avenue in Pine River.  For more information, call Sande at 218-587-2921.  EBT cards are accepted and gift cards are always available. 

The Kitchigami Regional Library's Mobile Library Fall & Winter 2010 Schedule (September - December) is now available on the mobile library itself or at your local library. 

Are you living with a compulsive gambler?  Has your life been affected by someone who has a gambling problem?  Gam-Anon Meetings are held every Monday at 7:00pm at the First Congregational Church at 415 Juniper in Brainerd.  For more information, call Colleen at 218-851-3543.

An eating disorders support group meets the first Monday of each month at the Lord of Life Church in Baxter from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.  The meeting is set up with the first hour being education and the second hour splitting into groups for discussion.  For more information, call Justina at 218-963-7421.

Families Anonymous is a support group for any family member or friend who is concerned with a loved one's problem with alcohol, drugs or behavior issues.  Weekly meetings take place on Mondays 6:30pm - 7:30pm at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church on Highway 371, Pequot Lakes, just south of the traffic light.  For more information, contact Sue at 218-831-2364.

Circle of Parents hold parenting support groups in Crow Wing County with the Brainerd Group meeting every Monday evening from 5:30pm - 7:00pm at Bridges of Hope at First Lutheran Church, 424 South 8th Street...use the Norwood Street entrance.  The Pequot Lakes Group meets every Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 7:30pm at the Pequot Lakes Trailside Center, next to the Baptist Church.  The Crosby Group meets every Friday morning from 9:30am - 10:30am at the Crosby-Ironton Presbyterian Church, across from the Hallett Library.  These meetings are free and confidential.  No registration is required.  Childcare provided while parents meet.  For more information, call Joan at 218-821-6429.

A reminder to individuals needing assistance in navigating through resources for persons with disabilities that assistance is available.  The Brainerd Public Library and Disability Linkage Line Of Central Minnesota sponsors a "Minnesota Help Network" site to help individuals navigate through resources and systems.  The Minnesota Help Network site is held the 2nd & 4th Thursday of each month from 10:00am - 1:00pm at the Brainerd Public Library in Brainerd.  Walk-ins are welcome but appointments can also be made by calling Sharon or Keith at 1-866-333-2466 or 218-317-1010.  The service is made possible by the Brainerd Public Library, Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Southeastern Minnesota Center for Independent Living. 

Faith in Action for Cass County is looking for interested volunteers to help with rides to medical appointments and errands, shopping for groceries and many other activities.  For more information, call 218-675-5435 or toll free at 866-675-5435.

There are many people living on fixed incomes, such as Social Security Disability, who may not have resources to rely on with sky rocketing gas prices and fuel oil.  The Disability Linkage Line of Minnesota will help locate disability services and information for persons with special needs with a simple phone call.  For more information, call 1-866-333-2466, one of the call centers for this service is in Brainerd.  

The Brainerd Area Crisis Line needs volunteers. The mission of the Crisis Line and Referral Service is to provide confidential and anonymous telephone support to people in distress and crisis, and to serve as a lifeline for positive change by connecting their clients to area resources.
